AAEM/RSA nomination period opens
for 2010-2011 elections
Dear AAEM Resident and Student Association Members,
The American Academy of Emergency Medicine Resident and Student Association (AAEM/RSA) has numerous opportunities for you to become more involved in our organization. We encourage interested members to review the list of positions below and submit an application to AAEM/RSA before the February 24, 2010, deadline. We will be holding elections for our 2010-2011 board of directors and medical student council in March. Self-nominations are allowed and encouraged. You must be an AAEM/RSA paid member to run for the board or council and to vote. Up to two residents from the same program can serve on the board of directors at the same time; however, only one resident from the program can serve as an officer (president, vice president, secretary/treasurer).
AAEM/RSA Board of Directors
All candidates for a position on the board of directors should plan on participating in monthly conference calls which last approximately two hours. Two in-person board meetings will be scheduled as well, one at the SAEM meeting in June 2010, and one at the 17th Annual AAEM Scientific Assembly in Orlando, February 28-March 2, 2011. Funding is provided for these in-person meetings.
The following board of director positions are open for nominations with a brief description of duties following each position:
President - responsible for running the AAEM/RSA board of directors and also serves a dual role as a member of the main AAEM board of directors.
Vice President - assists the president in running the board of directors, coordinates the Vice President's Council.
Secretary/Treasurer - controls the finances of AAEM/RSA and maintains the budget.
At-Large board members (five (5) positions) - Anyone running for an at-large position will participate on the board of directors and fill one of the following roles as listed below. Assignments will be determined by the president. All efforts will be made to ensure that you are assigned to a role you wish to fulfill:
1. Education Committee Chair - assemble and preside over the education committee and organize our presence at national emergency medicine meetings, including social gatherings such as AAEM/RSA parties. The chair will also coordinate the Midwest Medical Student Symposium and the resident track at the annual AAEM Scientific Assembly.
2. Communications Committee Chair - assemble and preside over the communications committee, whose primary role is to maintain and improve www.aaemrsa.org. The chair will also assist in recruiting writers for the AAEM/RSA e-newsletter, Modern Resident.
3. Membership Committee Chair - assemble and preside over the membership committee, whose primary role will be to coordinate efforts to increase AAEM/RSA membership through residency visits, mailings, etc.
4. Advocacy Committee Chair - assemble and preside over the advocacy committee, whose primary role is to advocate on core issues on behalf of AAEM/RSA and to work on special projects in line with AAEM/RSA's mission.
5. "Common Sense" Editor - serve as senior editor of the AAEM/RSA section of the AAEM newsletter, "Common Sense," recruit authors and contribute with regular submissions to the section. Also serves as co-chair of the communications committee.
International Member - this is an ex officio nonvoting board position. This board member is responsible for representing the needs of international AAEM/RSA resident members.
Medical Student Council:
The medical student council enhances AAEM/RSA's services to students and expands the medical student leadership to coordinate student initiatives, regional activities and recruitment.
The medical student council is composed of eleven officers which includes the president, vice president, eight regional representatives and one ex officio representative. AAEM/RSA's paid student members will elect the leadership and develop their own initiatives and services under the direction of the AAEM/RSA board of directors. The medical student council holds regularly scheduled meetings by conference calls.
The following student positions are open for nominations:
President - responsible for running the AAEM/RSA medical student council and also serves a dual role as the student representative to the AAEM/RSA board of directors.
Vice President - assists the president in running the medical student council and oversees maintenance of the EM Select program.
Regional Representatives: West, Midwest, South, Northeast (distribution of states listed below) - within their region, two representatives (each coming from a different school, unless no one else runs within the region) coordinate AAEM/RSA student initiatives, communicate with medical student liaisons at each school in their region, manage Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) listings and manage EM Select residency information.
International Member - this is an ex officio nonvoting medical student council position. This council representative is responsible for representing the needs of international AAEM/RSA student members.
Regional Breakdown:
West - CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, NM, UT, CO, ID, MT, WY, AL, TX, ND, SD, NE and HI
Midwest - KS, OK, MN, IA, MO, AR, LA, WI, IL, IN, OH and MI
Northeast - NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME and D.C.
South - KY, WV, VA, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, FL and P.R.
The AAEM/RSA board of directors and the medical student council members will take their posts mid-May 2010. The term of all positions shall be approximately one year. Any current 4th year medical student (paid member) or current resident/fellow (except residents/fellows currently in their last year of residency/fellowship) may run for any resident position. The student position must be filled by someone who will be a student during the 2010-2011 academic year. Only paid student members are eligible to run for election and vote in the election.
Voting for positions will be completed by internet ballot. Ballots will be accepted until March 26, 2010, at midnight CST. Please update your email address on file with AAEM/RSA if it has changed or was not provided when joining as a member. All candidates must submit the nomination form to Janet Wilson at the AAEM executive office by February 24, 2010, at midnight CST. Click here for the online nomination form.
