Resident/Student Issues: MLK/Drew Emergency Medicine residency closure

Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center has requested withdrawal of accreditation without prejudice from the ACGME for all residency programs under its sponsorship, effective 6/30/07. This includes withdrawal and closure of the MLK/Drew Emergency Medicine residency program.

MLKD is a PG 1-3 program with 12 residents per class. Accreditation through 6/30/07 will allow for EM3 residents to complete training on site. However, the 24 EM1 and EM2 residents, in conjunction with the program director, Joanne Williams, will need to undergo the process of identifying and procurring transfer into other residency programs.

AAEM/RSA shares the concerns of these displaced residents in the challenges they face locating and transferring into new residency programs. AAEM/RSA remains committed to assisting these residents as they meet these challenges. For more information on this evolving issue, or assistance in effecting resident transfers into your program, please feel free to contact Dr. Brian Potts at bpotts@uci.edu, or Dr. Jonathan Shultz at jonathan.f.shultz@healthpartners.com.
