Membership Categories
You’re eligible for Resident membership if you’re currently enrolled in an emergency medicine residency program accredited by one of the following:
- The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
- The American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
As a Resident member, you also have the right to vote in elections for resident positions on the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
This membership is for residents training in emergency medicine outside the U.S. or Canada. It also includes:
- Canadian residents who don’t qualify for standard Resident membership
- U.S. citizens training in emergency medicine programs that are not accredited by ACGME, AOA, or RCPSC
International Resident members are eligible to vote in AAEM/RSA Board of Directors elections.
Medical students who have graduated but have not yet applied to or been accepted into an emergency medicine residency program are eligible for Transitional membership for up to five years.
Graduating medical students serving in the military who are delayed from entering residency due to active service commitments are also eligible for up to five years of Transitional membership.
Transitional members receive the same benefits as Resident members but are not eligible to run for elected office.
If you are completing your emergency medicine residency, you are eligible to continue your involvement with AAEM through one of the following membership categories:
Associate Member – $195
For graduates not entering a fellowship.
- Available for up to 12 months after completing residency
- Includes a $100 discount on first-time membership
- Membership runs through December 31 of the following year (e.g., if you join in 2025, your membership is active through 12/31/2026)
Fellow-in-Training Member — $95
For graduates entering an emergency medicine fellowship.
- Discounted membership rate during fellowship training
- Includes full AAEM member benefits
Student membership is open to individuals enrolled in:
- A medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or
- An osteopathic medical school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA)
Eligible programs must be located in the United States or Canada.
Student members may vote for the student representative to the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors and for the regional representatives of the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council.
International Student membership is open to medical students outside the United States or Canada with an interest in emergency medicine.
Eligibility also includes:
- U.S. citizens attending medical schools not accredited by LCME or COCA
- Canadian students attending schools not accredited by CACMS
International Student members may vote in Medical Student Council elections and are eligible to run for the International Student Representative position.
