Eligibility Note: Before applying, please review Section 8.3 of the AAEM/RSA Bylaws to ensure you meet the applicable criteria for running for a position on the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors. Additionally, please review the “Board of Director Responsibilities” section below to understand the expectations, time commitment, and leadership duties associated with these roles.

Board of Directors Responsibilities

As a board member, you’ll serve a one-year term helping to guide AAEM/RSA’s mission, operations, and member experience. Core responsibilities include:

  • Participating in regular conference calls and timely communications (email, GroupMe, etc.)
  • Attending up to three funded, in-person board meetings, including the final meeting at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly
  • Supporting membership growth and engagement initiatives
  • Assisting staff with organizational and operational projects
  • Reviewing and responding to internal updates as needed
  • Fulfilling additional duties assigned to your elected role
Open Positions & Responsibilities
President

Position Description

  • Provides overall leadership to the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
  • Serves as the official spokesperson and representative of AAEM/RSA.
  • Acts as the Resident Representative on the AAEM Board of Directors, attending five funded, in-person meetings set by the AAEM Board — including two at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly in the year following board appointment.

Eligibility
Candidates must have served on the AAEM/RSA Board or as a chair/vice chair of an initiative for at least one year and must be in or entering their PGY-2 year or higher of residency. Rising interns (fourth-year medical students matching into emergency medicine) are not eligible.

Term & Time Commitment
This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.

Vice President

Position Description

  • Assists the president in leading the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
  • Serve as spokesperson to outside organizations when asked by the president.
  • Serves as a board liaison to one or more of the committees with assignments being determined by the president.

Term & Time Commitment
This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.

Secretary-Treasurer

Position Description

  • Supports the President in leading the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors and advancing the organization’s mission.
  • Represents AAEM/RSA to external organizations and partners when delegated by the President.
  • Serves as a board liaison to one or more assigned initiatives or focus areas, as determined by the President.
  • Oversees organizational finances in collaboration with staff, including budget planning, financial reporting, and stewardship of member resources.

Term & Time Commitment
This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.

At-Large Board Members (six positions)

Position Description

  • Serves as a board liaison to one or more initiatives or working groups, with assignments determined by the President.
  • Promotes the mission of AAEM/RSA by increasing membership through recruitment, developing valuable member benefits, and engaging with residency program directors.
  • Participates in project meetings or collaborative sessions as scheduled by initiative leads or the Board.

This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.

Student Representative

Position Description

  • Serves as the board liaison to the Medical Student Council (MSC) and other initiatives or projects as assigned by the President.
  • Chairs and leads the monthly meetings of the Medical Student Council, ensuring effective communication and collaboration between medical student members and the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
  • Promotes engagement among medical student members and supports initiatives that advance their involvement in emergency medicine.

This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.
