Eligibility Note: Before applying, please review Section 8.3 of the AAEM/RSA Bylaws to ensure you meet the applicable criteria for running for a position on the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council. Additionally, please review the “Medical Student Council Responsibilities” section below to understand the expectations, time commitment, and leadership duties associated with these roles.
As a council member, you’ll serve a one-year term supporting AAEM/RSA’s mission to represent and empower medical students in emergency medicine. Core responsibilities include:
- Participating in the development of initiatives and services under the direction of the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
- Attending regular conference calls and responding promptly to communications (email, GroupMe, etc.).
- Reviewing internal AAEM/RSA communications and responding as needed.
- Assisting staff and leaders with operational or organizational needs.
- Fulfilling other duties as assigned by your position or the Council Chair.
Open Positions & Responsibilities
Position Description
- Leads the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council (MSC) and serves as the primary liaison between the Council and the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.
- Participates in regular RSA Board conference calls (1 – 4 hours each).
- Plans and facilitates regular Medical Student Council meetings (approximately one hour each).
- Attends up to three funded, in-person board meetings, including the final meeting at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly in the year following council appointment.
- Guides the Council’s initiatives, supports regional representatives, and ensures alignment with AAEM/RSA’s mission and goals.
Term & Time Commitment
This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.
Position Description
- Assists the Chair in leading the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council (MSC) and advancing its goals.
- Oversees the maintenance and enhancement of student member benefits.
- Supports coordination of Council initiatives and communication among regional representatives.
Term & Time Commitment
This is a one-year term position, with an anticipated monthly time commitment of approximately 10 hours.
Position Description
- Coordinate AAEM/RSA student initiatives within their assigned region, ensuring alignment with national goals and priorities.
- Collaborate with the AAEM/RSA Vice Chair to maintain communication with Medical Student Liaisons at each school in their region.
- Plan and facilitate a Regional Student Symposium (virtual or in-person) during their term, including developing the event programming, securing speakers and residency program directors, coordinating logistics, and managing the overall schedule of events to ensure a successful and engaging experience for participants.
- Manage and update Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) listings and outreach efforts.
- Represent the interests and needs of medical student members within their region to the AAEM/RSA Medical Student Council (MSC).
- Region breakdown:
- Northeast – CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT
- South – AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, OK, P.R., SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV
- Midwest – IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, and WI
- West – AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, WA, and WY
- International – Represents the needs of all international AAEM/RSA student members
