Inquiries about Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders in Connection with Professional Licensing and Credentialing

RSA advocates the following objectives regarding the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders in relation to professional licensing and credentialing:

  • RSA expects that state licensing boards and credentialing organizations should only require physicians to acknowledge mental health disorders when the disorder actively impairs the judgment or ability to practice of the physician.

  • RSA expects that state licensing boards and credentialing organizations should forgo asking physicians about past history of mental health disorders as such questions may inhibit physicians from seeking treatment that could prevent impairment.
